MEGA 2.8 Carat Five Stone Transitional Old Mine Cut DIAMOND Platinum Ring French Vintage Band Tall
ABOUT:
Unbelievable finger coverage on this one!
NOTE - please forgive the "man hands" in the photos. Due to the larger size and splay of the large diamonds, it looked a bit silly on my size 4 fingers so I had to ask Mr. Mouse to step in and model how it would look on a larger finger that it was intended for - tee hee. It wears as a true half hoop with the nice sized diamonds spanning all the way to the adjacent finger.
A walk through four different diamond cutting methods used through the ages - all represented on one piece! Certainly one of a kind. This unique, extra "chonky" mega French Art Deco band is crafted in platinum and set with a fun mix of old cut diamonds totaling around 2.8 carats all together. At the center is a chunky old mine cut which is then combined with old European and transitional cut diamonds making up this impressive five stone, with three small brilliant cut diamonds on each side set in a half moon shape accent.
The five larger stones are perched high in ornate fleur de lis prongs. It stands tall off the finger and splays out quite wide - I could see this layered with a chunky donut band but it is also substantial enough to wear alone.
It is a vintage ring that was possibly designed to incorporate older diamonds that may have been from granny's ring or a passed down family piece(s)? But certainly a one of a kind, fun and attention grabbing piece!
French hallmark for platinum on the shank.
Antique box is not included. Please note the measurements as I have small fingers and it can be difficult to determine scale from pictures.
MEASUREMENTS:
Size: 9
Weight: 7.3g
north south measurement: 7.7mm
depth / Height off the finger: 7mm
27mm east west from half moon shoulder to half moon shoulder.
The old mine cut is 5.5mm with a chunky cut and is about 3/4 carat alone, the old European cuts are 5 and 5.2mm, and the transitional at the end are about 4.7mm each for a total of around 2.7 carat total for the center five stones. The six little brilliant cuts at the ends are 1.5 to 1.8mm each. I would not remove the stones from the setting for an exact carat weight but estimates to around 2.8 carat in diamonds.
IMPORTANT CONDITION NOTES:
Typical antique diamonds. The old mine cut has a slight warmth. One of the old European cuts is quite frosty with natural inclusions around half of the stone which is eye visible. The others have a silk or needle or linear inclusion here or there, and some carbon specks. These inclusions are slightly eye visible, but not glaring. Assumed to be a custom made piece.
Some wear to the prongs here and there as expected for a piece of this age but enough remain to hold each stone securely. This is something to keep an eye on over time with additional wear. Some of the prongs are the wide almost quarter bezel type and they can be a bit uneven under magnification from wear. Two stones click / move slightly in the settings when you tap them or shake the piece but again enough platinum on at least 3 sides to hold them.
Please note that all my pieces are pre-owned and in estate condition. They will have patina, surface wear, a few small nicks. These pieces may also have evidence of a sizing, some build up around the stones and / or inclusions seen under magnification, typical for antique pieces. I have mentioned any noticeable issues above and they are all still wearable and eager to be loved and accepted for many years to come, (the preservation of antique jewelry, even those with signs of their age and history, is important to me. : )
But - Please note due to age, this piece is not in mint condition. Pictures also serve as part of the description and condition report so please utilize the zoom feature which will magnify any wear significantly more than what is visible to the eye while wearing : )
