ABOUT:
This was a popular one in previews. All original French antique old cut citrine ring from the 1800s Victorian era with date specific French only hallmarks which gives us its exact origin and era. Yay!
With the sought after east to west bezel setting, the beautiful yellow gem is set in a classic 18k rosy gold domed back setting with milgrain details around the rim. When they fabricated the piece they backed it in red colored foil as they loved these flashes of color during this period. The result is what is referred to as "Oil and Vinegar" - it is so lovely, we still get a golden yellow coloring but then as the ring is moved we see the deeper red flashes. It's beautiful.
This piece was fabricated in the method the French created many of their Perpignan garnet rings that came out of the same region. I've had a few over these pieces years and had the pleasure of seeing some more examples and learning more about them at the French traditional jewelry display in Perpignan this year.
French hallmark used primarily in the 1800s for 18k gold, discontinued by the early 1900s.
Please note the measurements as I have small fingers and it can be difficult to determine scale from pictures. Antique box is not included.
MEASUREMENTS:
Size 8 1/4. Still sturdy for sizing - Usually they say within 2 sizes is a guide but this could possibly handle more - something to discuss with the person doing the work.
The citrine measures 10x7.5mm.
The piece weighs 2 grams.
IMPORTANT CONDITION NOTES:
Gorgeous color with a bit of crinkling and separation of color from age to the foil back setting, but lovely to find that there is no rust or muddy appearance as can often occur with foil backs. Still a very detectable red to the foil. The stone has an amazing color and a nice sheen but the table facets have a matte finish from wear.
Please note that all my pieces are pre-owned and in estate condition. They will have patina, surface wear, a few small nicks. These pieces may also have evidence of a sizing, some build up around the stones and / or inclusions seen under magnification, typical for antique pieces. I have mentioned any noticeable issues above and they are all still wearable and eager to be loved and accepted for many years to come, (the preservation of antique jewelry, even those with signs of their age and history, is important to me. : )
But - Please note due to age, this piece is not in mint condition. Pictures also serve as part of the description and condition report so please utilize the zoom feature which will magnify any wear significantly more than what is visible to the eye while wearing : )
I enjoy making my customers happy and matching unique pieces with new homes. Please feel free to reach out to me with any questions! It means a lot to me that you are visiting my shop! : )
