Ornate Antique Ball Rivet Poissarde Earrings Linear Red Paste Ruby Garnet Dangle French Belle Epoque 18k Gold Briquet Hoops Floral

ABOUT:

Wonderful French regional antique poissarde earrings in 18k gold with little pinkish red stones set into crimped bezels in a line - these are meant to look like rubies or garnets. To each side are little applied floral details that look like they may have some faint green gold wash remaining as they appear slightly accented. Unique design with ball rivet details on each side and a dangling ball charm at the base. Beautiful color, glow and patina to the ornately designed gold work.

The earrings have a lever back that clips into the ball rivet in the front at the top of the earring. This style of earring also has an additional wire below connecting the front and back curved sections of the earring for added stability. The name of this style earring "Poissarde" is derived from the fishwives of Paris who were the first to wear them and who played a significant role during the French Revolution. The knowledgeable dealer I purchased these from thought these regional jewels were probably from Normandy. Regional, or folk jewelry, is defined by a particular style confined to a particular region.

Antique box is not included. Please note the measurements as I have small hands and it can be difficult to decipher scale from photos, especially with the zoomed images that I am required to present for detail.

HALLMARKS:

French hallmarks for 18k gold, twice on each indicating all parts 18k, along with a goldsmith stamp.

SIZE & MEASUREMENTS:

They are a nice size, measuring 32mm from the top of the wire to the curved bottom and 10mm wide between each of the side rivets. The pair weighs 2.85 grams combined.

IMPORTANT CONDITION NOTES:

These old pieces always need a gentle hand as pretty much all antique earrings of this style do when you consider the delicate, little gold hinges, but they latch securely and the hinges function well. These are very popular, I’ve sold many and buyers often report back that it just takes a little practice and patience inserting the hooked end from behind and then latching them while on the ear but that they get the hang of it with time. : )
Still beautiful and appropriate for gentle handling considering age and fabrication.

As with all my pieces these are pre-owned and in estate condition. Beautiful rich patina. Still nicely shaped, a gradual shallow impression to the side leaving a tiny ripple here or there but may even have been done in the fabrication when curling the gold. The gold and design is beautiful and it is a very sweet pair. But as with all my pre-owned pieces - Please note this is not a mint condition item.

There are no dark spots to the gold, it was just difficult to photograph because it is so shiny and mirrored that it reflects its surroundings.
