I am selling an assortment of vintage to antique jewelry and rings which I have hunted for and gathered from around the world. Some examples seen in the last photo - thanks for stopping by!
ABOUT:
When I saw this one in the case at the outdoor antique market in Paris, it really stood out from the rest for the ornate movement and intricate design. It gives me giardinetti vibes with the vines that seem to scroll around the sides leading to the crimped collet settings that look like little starbursts or flower heads. The center is set with a pear shaped rose cut for a glint of sparkle and there are a few other rough cut diamond chips set into the silver peaks elsewhere as well. Their settings are similar to the French Bague au Firmament settings, the way they hold the diamonds in the little starburst settings.
Nice and sturdy hand feel with a large footprint on the finger. This antique ring has the French ET hallmark, sometimes referred to as Étranger (foreign meaning it is used on imported pieces), or Exempté de Titre meaning it is exempt from the French standard of 18k fabrication. This one is crafted in 14k gold with the diamond settings topped in silver as was customary for the Georgian to Victorian pieces. I think it might be Portuguese in origin because it resembles some of the fabrication techniques they were famous for using during the period, but I usually see them larger and more heavy handed whereas this one has a delicateness to the design with the openwork scrolling vines.
It tests at 14k, it looks like this style of hallmark was used from 1864 to 1893 although the ring appears to be Georgian era so it may have been stamped for the secondary market. Well over 125 years old / antique though to be sure. This is a pretty one to layer to add an ornate antique head turner to the ring stack.
The shank is also interesting with banded triple reeds and open space between them. It has a rosy gold hue.
Antique box not included. Please note the measurements as I have small fingers and it can be difficult to determine scale from pictures.
MEASUREMENTS:
Size 8. Weighs 5.2 grams. The ring face is 13.6mm north south.
IMPORTANT CONDITION NOTES:
At the peaks of some of the starburst crimped collet settings there used to be the tiniest rose cut diamond. Five of these are missing but I decided to purchase it as is because it is really not noticeable. The other rose cuts in closed back settings are dark in color making them appear similar to the tiny vacant settings and the silver catches the light similar to the point of a tiny rose cut. My fear with attempting to repair is that it would destroy the patina of the piece and the places where heat was used to reset the stone would stand out like a sore thumb vs. now where you can hardly tell. But something to look for in the zoomed photos. Stable and wearable. It's a very sturdy shank and the center pear rose cut which is really the only one eye visible is very well set.
Please note that all my pieces are pre-owned and in estate condition. They will have patina, surface wear, a few small nicks. These pieces may also have evidence of a sizing, some build up around the stones and / or inclusions seen under magnification, typical for antique pieces. I have mentioned any noticeable issues above and they are all still wearable and eager to be loved and accepted for many years to come, (the preservation of antique jewelry, even those with signs of their age and history, is important to me. : )
But - Please note due to age, this piece is not in mint condition. Pictures also serve as part of the description and condition report so please utilize the zoom feature which will magnify any wear significantly more than what is visible to the eye while wearing : )
Very sweet piece from a very special era. I enjoy making my customers happy and matching unique pieces with new homes. Please feel free to reach out to me with any questions! It means a lot to me that you are visiting my shop! : )
