ABOUT:

If you follow me, you know pansies are my thing! In my garden, they look up at me with little smiles on their faces and will always make me think of my mom as we both love them. This little perfume / scent bottle is the perfect size for a pendant and would make the most interesting, one of a kind conversation piece to wear. I could see it worn with some small gems inside like a shaker locket.

This one has a little crystal stopper and a nice quality and patina to the lid which is gold fill. I purchased it with another one that had a gold lid with hallmark from the Georgian period and they appeared similar in fabrication otherwise so I am assuming this is from around that time or at the very latest, from the Victorian period.

I purchased it from a reputable source in France who attributed it to (highly collectible) Baccarat, a French luxury house and manufacturer of fine crystal founded in 1764. There are no marks or anything but it's at least a possibility as that is what I was told.

Nowhere is the pansy more representative of love, thought, and remembrance than in France, considering that their very name is derived from the French word "pensée" (meaning "thought").

How wonderful that it is wearable! Special craftsmanship with beautiful color and light catching ability. This perfume or scent bottle may also have been worn on a chatelaine as a vinaigrette, to hold to the nose when passing pungent areas in the street in the days before modern plumbing.

The gold fill screw top has a loop to wear on a chain,

Special fabrication the way they created the colorful pansy decoration is somehow set it within the glass - as it is not applied to the surface, nor is it reverse applied, but rather both the front and back of the flower stamp is encased in the glass. With the color and pattern in the recesses of the green, I suspect it might be enamel.

Antique boxes / props, chains or other items in group shot not included. Please note the measurements as I have small hands and it can be difficult to decipher scale from photos, especially with the zoomed images that I am required to present for detail.

MEASUREMENTS:

41mm to the top of the loop, the bottle is 25mm wide and 12mm deep. It weighs 10.8grams.

IMPORTANT CONDITION NOTES:

I have trouble getting the stopper inside to come out, I think because screwing in the gold filled top pushes it in quite snugly. There is a small uneven area under the loop where perhaps it was originally connected to the lid on both sides, where now it is only one and could open like any other bale or jump ring with a crease, but it is still stable and certainly wearable. Some bubbles around the pansy from when it was made.
Some nibbles that look like frosty areas of abrasions on the raised edges of the piece, more on the back side, but considering age, I would say it is appropriate wear and the piece overall has a lovely sheen and color, it is not dull in any way. Lid opens and closes securely although I am not sure if it is water tight.

Please note that all my pieces are pre-owned and in estate condition. They will have patina, surface wear, a few small nicks. These pieces may also have evidence of a sizing, some build up around the stones and / or inclusions seen under magnification, typical for antique pieces. I have mentioned any noticeable issues above and they are all still wearable and eager to be loved and accepted for many years to come, (the preservation of antique jewelry, even those with signs of their age and history, is important to me. : )
But - Please note due to age, this piece is not in mint condition. Pictures also serve as part of the description and condition report so please utilize the zoom feature which will magnify any wear significantly more than what is visible to the eye while wearing : )
