ABOUT:
Look at this little sweetie - French antique ring crafted in platinum with half a carat old mine cut diamond. While it is not a huge stone, can you guess why I jumped at it!? Its unique feature is that it the old mine cut diamond is pear in shape! (Always exciting to find antique diamonds in shapes outside of round.) It can be a bit discreet, the pear shape, because it is set up in tall prongs where the base of the ring face is round, making the ring face appear overall round which is a fun accent to the stone. A unique little antique stone and setting! I love looking through the diamond to the elongated octagon culet! : )
This timeless sweetie also has the added bonus of having excellent prongs making it ready for daily wear. A beautiful stacker, right hand ring, anniversary or engagement ring.
The setting is also quite lovely with the long prongs to hold the diamond up so that it can catch the light. The little ruffled halo of platinum around the base of the setting serves as an illusion setting to make the diamond appear even larger on the hand (by surrounding it with the white metal), while also giving it a lovely design element.
Found in Sweden on my last inventory trip but this one is French made, with their hallmark for platinum.
Antique box not included. Please note the measurements as I have small fingers and it can be difficult to determine scale from pictures.
MEASUREMENTS:
Size 8 1/2 -
For sizing - I am sorry I don't offer it. Best to discuss with your local jeweler who would be doing the work, to see how far they would feel comfortable in sizing (sometimes you can email or text them photos for feedback). It does have a skinny shank at the back but the prongs are excellent so there is no danger of the stone loosening with a sizing. The skinniness of the shank is over 1mm so it should hopefully be enough to work with.
The diamond is about 5.7x4.6mm. I do not remove stones from their settings for exact carat weight but it's about half a carat estimated.
The ring face is 7.1mm north south and stands 5.7mm off the finger.
The ring weight 2 grams.
IMPORTANT CONDITION NOTES:
The gallery is a bit untidy with welds at the shoulders including one that appears to have been done in gold and has muddled the openwork shoulder detail and a gold hue spreading under the ring face. It is not super visible when wearing the ring face up, but you'll want to study the side and underside photos to see it - see my website as well for additional pics. I reduced the price as soon as I discovered this as I hadn't even noticed it when I bought it. I guess I was too busy fan girling about the pear OMC - whoopsies. It is 100% stable and sturdy, but again a bit untidy so please look for that, sold as is.
Prongs are excellent, the diamond is held 100% securely on all sides by long prongs. Back of the shank is thin as mentioned.
Typical antique diamond with some natural inclusions as this was cut in much more limited supply compared to the 100+ millions of carats of diamonds produced each year now. This one has a crystal pocket inclusion off the large, fun octagonal shaped culet. That one can catch the light and reflect around. It also has three needle inclusions in one area and in a third area has two indented natural inclusions that carry up to the surface tucked right up against one of the prongs. No dark carbon or inky spots so while it sounds like a lot of inclusion activity, it isn't super glaring because it was cut to face up clearer where the area above the culet has nothing visible making the center clear / see-through, and making the aforementioned inclusions get a bit lost in the outside faceting of the stone if that makes sense. But studying the stone and moving it around can make the inclusions slightly eye visible, the pocket one being the most evident.
Evidence of a sizing to the back which has a different hue and slight unevenness, appears to have been sized up so sizing it again could improve some of that.
Please also note that I take some photos / videos in the sunshine because it captures the lovely color and sparkle, but it also highlights any surface wear, scratches, abrasions, buildup or inclusions that can catch the light, making these things appear worse than they would with normal day to day wear. : ) Hopefully the pics in all lightning conditions help as they serve as part of the description.
Please note that all my pieces are pre-owned and in estate condition. They will have patina, surface wear, a few small nicks. These pieces may also have evidence of a sizing, some build up around the stones and / or inclusions seen under magnification, typical for antique pieces. I have mentioned any noticeable issues above and they are all still wearable and eager to be loved and accepted for many years to come, (the preservation of antique jewelry, even those with signs of their age and history, is important to me. : ) There are no dark spots to the gold, it was just difficult to photograph because it is so shiny and mirrored that it reflects its surroundings including the green trees out the window.
But - Please note due to age, this piece is not in mint condition. Pictures also serve as part of the description and condition report so please utilize the zoom feature which will magnify any wear significantly more than what is visible to the eye while wearing : )
