Perpignan GARNET Marquise Navette French Victorian Antique Rose Cut Cluster Ring 18k Gold Belle Epoque Pink Purple

ABOUT:

I still have some Perpignan garnet pieces set aside to list from my trip there this past summer.  
Historic glowing French antique ring in 18k rosy gold set with rose cut foiled Perpignan garnets.  The Almandine garnet stones have the most beautiful deep pinkish purple color and reflect a lovely glow from the back.  Like a juicy berry, these stones that are so rich in color and yet still have the ability to sparkle so beautifully!

A favorite of mine in the gemstone world!  Their textbook look with the color and fabrication found only in these stones specifically.  In olden times Perpignan Garnets were thought to cure blood disorders and excessive anger, and symbolized constancy and loyalty.  They are named as such for the region where they were mined in the South of France.   These pieces are just so special and so unique, specific to the region in France where they were passed down from mothers to daughters as a symbol of pride of their Catalonian heritage.  Highly collectible to antique jewelry enthusiasts as much as ever today!  

There have only ever been a handful of artisans at one time, educated in the process of making these.  These mines have long since closed making the older ones quite collectible to those that know them.  This is one of the original antique ones.  They are known for their beautiful color and brilliance, along with the way the stones were cut.  A few workshops remain in Perpignan making modern pieces in the old style today, although the later versions typically have a different look and color.

HALLMARKS:
No hallmarks remain which is actually common for French pieces as they are marked in the back and often lost during a sizing or from wear. But these pieces are made only in France and only in this way, where they used only 18k gold. The gold has a gorgeous rosy hue.

SIZE & MEASUREMENTS:

Currently a size 6 on my ring sizer mandrel. Ring face is large at 18x11mm and 5mm tall off the finger. It weighs 3 grams.

IMPORTANT CONDITION NOTES:

The center bezel set garnet is connected by gold wire/ loop to the ring face. This is not a repair! These antique rings are always fabricated in this method (it's one way to know it is a real Perpignan garnet!). I have one in my person collection with the same fabrication and have seen many others so this is how it was made. As such the center stone in its bezel setting moves slightly as it is raised above the others. There are no cracks or deep chips, just a few nicks and nibbles typical for pieces of this age. Overall a lovely sheen and polish. Color is fantastic. Evidence of a sizing to the back with a slightly different hue to the gold. Edge of the shank is a bit blunt from age and wear but the piece is still stable and very wearable. We do avoid getting closed back settings wet.

Please note that all my pieces are pre-owned and in estate condition. They will have patina, surface wear, a few small nicks. These pieces may also have evidence of a sizing, some build up around the stones and / or inclusions seen under magnification, typical for antique pieces. I have mentioned any noticeable issues above and they are all still wearable and eager to be loved and accepted for many years to come, (the preservation of antique jewelry, even those with signs of their age and history, is important to me. : )
