ABOUT:
Super excited to offer this amazing antique piece (pieces!), which stopped me in my tracks when it was shown to me by the loveliest dealer in Italy. This one is truly more than meets the eye!
At first glance, it looks like a pretty little ring, but upon closer inspection you can see that if you pull the two sides of the ring face apart, it turns into a pair of hoop earrings!
(Insert mind blown emoji here.)
I look at thousands of pieces of antique jewelry every day and this is the one and only time I have seen a piece like this. The other convertible pieces I have seen usually involve two settings where you unscrew the stones and move them between separate pieces. This is the first I've seen where the two become one and vice versa.
Forgive me though, in the previews - I listed this as a sapphire but once I spent more time with it and studied it, I can see that the blue stones are actually blue doublets. They are meant to look like sapphires but they are not. Each blue stone has a chevron of pearls on each side which become the face of the hoop earrings.
No hallmarks but tests at 14k gold with a rosy hue.
Please note the measurements as I have small fingers and it can be difficult to determine scale from pictures. Antique box is not included.
MEASUREMENTS:
Size 5, a little over but does not reach 5 1/4.
8.8mm north south as a ring. When earrings, the little triangular pearl and blue stone details are about 8.8x8.5mm.
It weighs 3.75 grams.
IMPORTANT CONDITION NOTES:
When assembled or disassembled, each piece is quite sturdy but we are talking about 100+ year old gold pieces with movable parts so it does need a gentle hand. At first it took me a few tries to get the earrings to nest back in nicely as a ring. I found starting at the back of the ring, lining up the two channels and then slowly working together the ring face was the best method. The ear wires sometimes don't nest into the channel perfectly at first attempt and have to be gently guided into the channels. Once all the components are aligned properly, it closes perfectly and snugly with tight seams and holds its shape well while wearing.
It just takes a bit of practice to get the hang of it but the important part is to proceed gently because trying to force it could bend some components and make it so that they no longer nest so perfectly together. It's also something where if it were me, I'd view it as more of a special collector's piece because assembling and disassembling it on a daily basis would be putting a lot of strain on this unique antique piece.
The earrings have a hooked end that you insert from the back of the ear and latch it into a catch at the front. I don't have anyone to model jewelry for me and my ear form does not flex so in reality, the pearl and blue stone component will hang a little lower / face forward on a real ear where the earring is held at the middle of the ear wire by the ear lobe.
A little wear and patina to the pearls but the setting is very tidy. Some nibbles and a bit of loss to one edge of the doublet but this is seen more under magnification than with regular wear.
The shank is a bit blunt but this is its fabrication and not any fault or condition issue. It's about as good of condition as one could ask for such a rare and uncommon piece with movable parts.
I have additional photos/video on my website besides those allowed here so feel free to request additional.
Please also note that I take some photos in the sunshine to highlight the color but this can also magnify any surface wear, inclusions etc. more than what is seen with normal day to day wear.
Thanks so much for looking at my items!
Please note that all my pieces are pre-owned and in estate condition. They will have patina, surface wear, a few small nicks. These pieces may also have evidence of a sizing, some build up around the stones and / or inclusions seen under magnification, typical for antique pieces. I have mentioned any noticeable issues above and they are all still wearable and eager to be loved and accepted for many years to come, (the preservation of antique jewelry, even those with signs of their age and history, is important to me. : )
But - Please note due to age, this piece is not in mint condition. Pictures also serve as part of the description and condition report so please utilize the zoom feature which will magnify any wear significantly more than what is visible to the eye while wearing : )

All items hand picked by me, one at a time from all over the world. All listings individually written by me, and not AI, after studying each piece to discuss its beauties and its ; ) eccentricities (which I am picky to point out).
Many of my listings include group shots – I find the comparisons between pieces help show scale, diamond hues, etc. All items in group shots are inventory, but refer to the website to see what items have sold out and to watch for new listings from the grouping to appear on the home page.
