ABOUT:
We love finding natural diamonds with unique characteristics and this one certainly fits the bill with its hexagonal shape and gorgeous color. I had a thought of curiosity as to whether it was a cape diamond with the unique cut and color combo but my items do well without paperwork and I didn't want to risk harming the setting so I can't make any claims in that regard. (It was evaluated by a reputable appraisal company in Paris though to confirm it to be a natural stone.)
The nice sized unique diamond has a large table / flat top, almost like a portrait cut diamond with just two facets on the top outside edge. The pavilion facets are step cut giving the stone a great geometry and a hall of mirrors effect when looking through the stone.
This chunky ring is crafted in 18k white gold which was an intentional choice to provide a contrast with the subtle pale yellow color of the diamond. We often see diamonds with hues set in white gold to enhance that color variation. Adding to the fun of this piece is the very interesting setting that is so perfectly suited to the uniquely cut diamond. The bezel holds the diamond, precisely nested and propped in the V shape bezel, which allows light to pass through from the sides. So fun to view from the side! And the knife edge shank carries the beveled detail around the entire band to the ring face.
This one would be a really unique engagement ring and I love wearing it with a chunky yellow gold band in a mixed metal stack.
I love the delicious diamond color - it is one I seek out, a subtle pale yellow, facing up whiter in ambient light and lighting up with a gorgeous light yellow color in the sunshine.
French hallmarks for 18k with a goldsmith stamp. There is also a cursive signature inside from the maker but I could not decipher it.
Antique box not included. Please note the measurements as I have small hands and it can be difficult to decipher scale from photos, especially with the zoomed images that I am required to present for detail.
SIZE & MEASUREMENTS:
The diamond is 6.8mm by 7.8mm by 2.25mm. Because of its uncommon cut, it is not possible to know the carat weight without removing the stone to put it on a scale for weight but it is a spready stone, using hexagon mm to carat charts, it appears to be over a carat. A modern round brilliant cut diamond that measures one carat is usually around 6.5mm to give you an idea of scale and how it appears to the eye while wearing.
The widest part of the shank there at the ring face is 7mm north south. It tapers to the back but remains quite thick at 4.4mm north south.
The ring face is about 4.5mm tall off the finger and that is how tall the ring shoulders are as well because the beveled edges of the shank come up to the height of the bezel if that makes sense.
The piece weighs a sturdy 9.1 grams.
It is a snug size 6.5.
About sizing: Most rings can be sized to an extent, usually they say 2 sizes is a good guide. For this one, I do think it would be best to discuss with the person doing the work. First for the beveled edge of the shank (although even if it was slightly smoothed at the back, that would be no big deal and wouldn't affect the appearance of the ring). And Second for the sort of tension setting with the bezel being sort of V shaped, holding the stone on the left and right sides.
If the shank is sized, it may affect the way the stone nests into the ring face so the person doing the work should be able to determine to what extent they would feel comfortable adjusting.
This is not a fragile or delicate piece, it's just that opinions vary from jeweler to jeweler and with the diamond set into the ring face, it would help to get your local jewelers' feedback if that makes sense.
IMPORTANT CONDITION NOTES:
Some wear to the white gold that can catch the light due to the mirrored finish, I expect it may have the customary rhodium plating to give it the setting the bright white coloring as there are some warmer areas to the back of the shank where there was wear along the beveled edge. The stone moves slightly in the setting and can click when you tap it or shake it aggressively although with normal wear I don't notice it. It is held by a chunky bezel overlapping both sides of the hexagon so it is in absolutely no danger of coming free.
Some faint natural inclusions to the diamond, slightly eye visible. There is an indented natural inclusion in one area of the outside bevel. GIA defines this as a dent that occurs under the surface of a diamond as a result of the diamond cutter's decision not to polish it off, because doing so could end up harming the diamond so the cutters would work around it - this is not considered a defect or blemish but under strong magnification it appears as a slight interruption to the facet. A slight shadow inclusion and some tiny speck inclusions, usually very slightly eye visible but can catch the light. Nothing dark or glaring. Just being super picky, it is a fabulous piece. Wonderful color and sparkle!
The diamond seems to vary in hue based on the lighting. It isn't a vibrant yellow but doesn't have the bright white color so you can see the slight warmth while wearing which brightens to a more noticeable yellow hue in direct light.
As mentioned, my items do very well without paperwork so I have not sent the stone for certification but always provide as much detail as possible with measurements, condition notes and many extra photos (see website) to capture it true to life in various lighting conditions, which can be translated to grading scales if desired.
Please note that I take some photos / videos in the sunshine because it captures the lovely color and sparkle, but it also highlights any surface wear, scratches, abrasions, buildup or inclusions that can catch the light, making these things appear worse than they would with normal day to day wear. : ) Hopefully the pics in all lighting conditions help as they serve as part of the description.
Please note that all my pieces are pre-owned and in estate condition. They will have patina, surface wear, a few small nicks. These pieces may also have evidence of a sizing, some build up around the stones and / or inclusions seen under magnification, typical for antique pieces. I have mentioned any noticeable issues above and they are all still wearable and eager to be loved and accepted for many years to come, (the preservation of antique jewelry, even those with signs of their age and history, is important to me. : )
But - Please note due to age, this piece is not in mint condition. Pictures also serve as part of the description and condition report so please utilize the zoom feature which will magnify any wear significantly more than what is visible to the eye while wearing : )

Many of my listings include group shots – I find the comparisons between pieces help show scale, diamond hues, etc. All items in group shots are inventory, but refer to the website to see what items have sold out and to watch for new listings from the grouping to appear on the home page.
