ABOUT:
Beautiful antique Victorian "REGARD" ring - this acrostic piece uses the first letter of each of the gems: Ruby Emerald Garnet Amethyst Ruby Diamond - to spell out the sentiment. Beautiful token of love or friendship. Also fun to wear because of the beautiful colors of the mixed gems. Antique closed back setting with swirling designs to the gallery and shoulders which extend to the hand engraved shank which is engraved all the way around. I just love this design detail - no aspect of the ring is missed in the ornate flourishes!
So often we find these with replacement stones or paste gems but this one is all original with all the correct gemstones in better than most condition than we usually find with lovely sheen remaining.
No hallmarks remain, but I tested it in several places at 14k gold. May be 15k as it likely came from England but I don't have a test for that.
Antique box not included. Please note the measurements as I have small fingers and it can be difficult to determine scale from pictures.
MEASUREMENTS:
Size 4 1/8, almost reaches the 4 1/4 line. Sizing could be possible just having your goldsmith smooth and perhaps blend the pattern at the back which already shows a bit of wear from age but is still quite stable.
The ring face is 5.2mm north south.
The ring weight is 1.7 grams.
IMPORTANT CONDITION NOTES:
This one is in better condition than many I can find. The gems still have a gorgeous sheen and polish and are not scuffed or heavily abraided. While there is a worn prong here or there, all stones are held on all sides so this one can handle a bit more regular wear compared to many pieces from the 1800s that are more delicate. We avoid getting these wet with the closed back settings but the gems would hide most any deterioration that would occur anyway. The rose cut diamond on the end appears warm with some deterioration to the foil and age to the foil back. There is a bit of wear at the very back to the engraved swirling detail just from being on the inside palm of the hand. It's possible it was sized but even under magnification there are no glaring seams or anything.
Please also note that I take some photos / videos in the sunshine because it captures the lovely color and sparkle, but it also highlights any surface wear, scratches, abrasions, buildup or inclusions that can catch the light, making these things appear worse than they would with normal day to day wear. : ) Hopefully the pics in all lightning conditions help as they serve as part of the description.
Please note that all my pieces are pre-owned and in estate condition. They will have patina, surface wear, a few small nicks. These pieces may also have evidence of a sizing, some build up around the stones and / or inclusions seen under magnification, typical for antique pieces. I have mentioned any noticeable issues above and they are all still wearable and eager to be loved and accepted for many years to come, (the preservation of antique jewelry, even those with signs of their age and history, is important to me. : ) There are no dark spots to the gold, it was just difficult to photograph because it is so shiny and mirrored that it reflects its surroundings including the green trees out the window.
But - Please note due to age, this piece is not in mint condition. Pictures also serve as part of the description and condition report so please utilize the zoom feature which will magnify any wear significantly more than what is visible to the eye while wearing : )
