ABOUT:
You know I love a navette for the drama! Here is personal collection release from Paris with all the texture and glitter offered by the nicely domed rose cut diamonds. We often see rose cuts from the period with more thinly sliced faceting but these have some nice, rounded crowns and my favorite part is their organic shape! Some of them are a cushioned triangle shape including the largest center diamond, while others are more round and others more cushion cut in outline form. All rose cuts though with those wonderful disco ball facets. Wears face up around about 1.6 carat. These are the so called dutch (or also named holland, Antwerp or crowned rose cut) with the high crowns.
All original French antique piece in 18k gold which has a rosy hue from age and patina and topped in silver as was customary for the period to set diamonds in a white metal. I love looking at it from the side to see that texture. With the customary French design of the knife edge shank with accent diamonds set into each shoulder.
French hallmarks confirming the above. Such a wonderful antique look, glittering away even as I look at it now in ambient light.
Please note the measurements as I have small fingers and it can be difficult to determine scale from pictures. Antique box is not included.
MEASUREMENTS:
Size 5 3/4
There's really no way to calculate an accurate carat weight with all the freeform shapes in this ring and I would never remove them. The 21 diamonds all vary in form. The largest at center is 4x3.7mm and that softened cornered triangular shape. It's not the chaffre cut I've talked to you all about before as it still has the typical rose cut faceting but a cool one of one stone, like all hand cut antiques. The others are 2.5 to 3mm each.
Face up value I would say wears at around 1.6 carat and while they are nicely domed, actual carat weight is likely less with the flat backs of the rose cut diamonds that are spready in nature.
The piece weighs 3.2 grams.
IMPORTANT CONDITION NOTES:
This one needs gentle wear because it was fabricated with little bead prongs and an outside crimped edge setting. Therefore there are no real prongs along the outline of the ring face, rather they are pinched in place. A beautiful effect to be sure, allowing the diamonds to really shine as the stars of the show but after around 150 years, she needs a gentle hand just like a human would (can you imagine!? : )
None of the stones move. I had my jeweler tighten them, but we'd never want to muddy the ring face by completely re-working it and adding reinforcements everywhere.
These are wonderful rose cuts, many are eye clean. Slight warmth typical and some natural inclusions but none appear overall frosty throughout like we usually see. So those nicely domed beauties really glitter. Under magnification there are a few indented natural inclusions leaving an unpolished edge, some little flakes of loss, what looks like a nick, but these are natural characteristics of the stones. None are cracked in half and they all fill the settings, snugged in nicely into the cobblestone ring face. Just the typical quirks we see on pieces of this age, but they are beautiful hand chiseled antique diamonds.
Please note that all my pieces are pre-owned and in estate condition. They will have patina, surface wear, a few small nicks. These pieces may also have evidence of a sizing, some build up around the stones and / or inclusions seen under magnification, typical for antique pieces. I have mentioned any noticeable issues above and they are all still wearable and eager to be loved and accepted for many years to come, (the preservation of antique jewelry, even those with signs of their age and history, is important to me. : )
But - Please note due to age, this piece is not in mint condition. Pictures also serve as part of the description and condition report so please utilize the zoom feature which will magnify any wear significantly more than what is visible to the eye while wearing : )

A note about antique diamonds:
The whole "4 C's" of cut, color, clarity, carat didn't come about until the 1940s so prior to that and especially on antique pieces, there was not as much emphasis placed on those things. (Sure people probably appreciated a certain look of a certain diamond as it appeared to the eye but it was not a graded scale like we have today for machine cut stones.) It is difficult to judge antique stones against modern day diamonds with their grading system evaluating their mathematically perfected proportions using methods and standards that didn’t exist for hand cut old cut diamonds. No two old cuts are the same as they were crafted in times lacking those modern standards. The diamond cutters of the time were experts at hand cutting each stone to enhance it which means that even lower color grades can be cut to appear whiter. (Although it is also worth noting that many antique collectors prefer and seek out antique diamonds with warmer hues.)
It is also interesting that "lower graded" diamonds in today's scale system, were some of the best on the market during that period! So it is less about their grades and more about the unique play of light and color that each one can offer. I read one article that put it: “When searching for the perfect old cut diamond (for you), you need to view them through different eyes as you would for a modern diamond." Laboratory grading reports don’t offer too much information in regards to the beauty or sparkle of an antique diamond, which is based on the individual character and uniqueness that each hand cut stone potentially offers.
