SNAKE Coiled Cabochon GARNET Ring 14k Figural 18k Gold Shank Juicy Glow Purple Victorian
SNAKE Coiled Cabochon GARNET Ring 14k Figural 18k Gold Shank Juicy Glow Purple Victorian
ABOUT:
A fun figural snake ring - this one has a great look when worn, the way the oblong body coils across the finger. At the center it is set with a glossy, juicy cabochon garnet that has a beautiful glow from within and reads purplish maroon in color, like a fine wine or a ripe berry.
This is a conversion with the shank added later to another piece that I assume was a pin? They attached the shank at different points to give the piece a bypass setting. Fun to wear and stack!
In ancient times, snakes represented the duality of good and evil, as well as being symbols of death and rebirth or immortality, transformation and healing, and even fertility. This motif was highly popularized, especially in ring form, by Queen Victoria who received one from Prince Albert who designed it after the Roman belief that the intertwined snake represented eternal and everlasting love. This design remained popular through the Victorian era and into the Art Nouveau period and at times, would take the shape of a love knot, as is the case with this ring.
Found in England. No hallmarks remain but tested to confirm. The ring face / snake is 14k and the shank is 18k gold.
Please note the measurements as I have small fingers and it can be difficult to determine scale from pictures. Antique box is not included.
MEASUREMENTS:
Size 7.
The snake is 18x11mm and the garnet is 8x6mm with a nicely domed top. Please note these measurements as I am required to include zoomed in photos which makes all pieces look larger. The piece weighs 2.9 grams.
CONDITION NOTES:
There is some discoloration to the snake that actually appears to be black enamel remnants in the recesses. It is mostly gone so the piece appears more like yellow gold with some spots of patina. Some surface wear and specks to the garnet but overall a lovely sheen and beautiful glow and color. The shank looks a bit rippled, probably just done in the making as it was clearly custom made to bypass in form and connect to the snake.
Please note that all my pieces are pre-owned and in estate condition. They will have patina, surface wear, a few small nicks. These pieces may also have evidence of a sizing, some build up around the stones and / or inclusions seen under magnification, typical for antique pieces. I have mentioned any noticeable issues above and they are all still wearable and eager to be loved and accepted for many years to come, (the preservation of antique jewelry, even those with signs of their age and history, is important to me. : )
But - Please note due to age, this piece is not in mint condition. Pictures also serve as part of the description and condition report so please utilize the zoom feature which will magnify any wear significantly more than what is visible to the eye while wearing : )
