ABOUT:
Awesome French antique figural coiled snake brooch in 18k solid gold encrusted with 12 rose cut diamonds around the center emerald. The cluster on the head is topped in platinum. The piece has wonderfully detailed engraved scale texture and gemset with a green emerald on its head flanked by 2 ruby eyes.
Very nice quality to the design, this brooch would be an excellent conversion to a pendant. It is possible to run a chain through the coils of the body as seen in the pics but it tends to teeter some with the protruding pin back, a jeweler could permanently convert it to a pendant if desired. Quite eye catching French antique piece from the late 1800s Victorian Belle Epoque period.
The snake was a popular motif during Victorian times (made even more popular by Queen Victoria herself) usually representing eternal love or good and evil among other things.
Chain in photos is not included, it is a costume chain from Target that I use for staging : )
MEASUREMENTS:
41x15mm. It weighs a sturdy 5 grams. The diamonds are each about 1.5mm give or take.
HALLMARKS:
French hallmarks for 18k and platinum on the tail and the pin post is also stamped for 18k gold. Rich antique patina with some rosy highlights.
IMPORTANT CONDITION NOTES:
Please note that all my pieces are in estate condition. Typical antique diamonds with some rough or frosty edges, irregular facets, shapes and sizes, warm from being in the closed back setting. This is what we expect to see on these little rose cuts as they were cut by hand. A few nicks and some natural inclusions to the emerald. The patina is lovely. Such a fun and interesting antique piece.
