ABOUT:
Squeee for figural antique jewelry! I've had a few of these snakes over the years but this one has a flatter and wider head - I think it's a cobra!
Awesome French antique figural coiled snake brooch - this one is crafted in mostly silver with 18k gold bezel holding the emerald and the ruby eyes. There is also some goldwash / vermeil on the inside giving the piece a warm glow. The pin post is metal.
This sparkly little guy is encrusted with 45 rose cut diamonds on the head and about around the center head emerald. It gives it a wonderful texture and all over sparkle.
Very versatile and fun design, this brooch would be an excellent conversion to a pendant. It is also possible to run a chain through the coils of the body as seen in the pics but it tends to teeter and not lie flat with the protruding pin back, so a jeweler could permanently convert it to a pendant if desired. It can also be used as a connector as it has a loop at the tail. One other little feature is the little scarf clip at the center of the body which is hinged to open. This would have original been worn on the collar but it is excellent as a pendant. Quite eye catching French antique piece from the late 1800s Victorian Belle Epoque period.
The snake was a popular motif during Victorian times (made even more popular by Queen Victoria herself) usually representing eternal love or good and evil among other things.

MEASUREMENTS:
42x17mm. It weighs a sturdy 8.25 grams. The diamonds are each about 1.5mm give or take.
HALLMARKS:
French hallmark for silver.
IMPORTANT CONDITION NOTES:
Please note that all my pieces are in estate condition. Typical antique diamonds with some rough or frosty edges, irregular facets, shapes and sizes. This is what we expect to see on these little rose cuts as they were cut by hand and likely have always been this way. One edge of the emerald has small chips and abrasions from an inclusion in that area. There are inclusions on the opposite side as well, but it appears complete in shape and fills the rectangular bezel fully, it's just the edge that appears unpolished. The patina is lovely. Such a fun and interesting antique piece.
Please note that all my pieces are pre-owned and in estate condition. They will have patina, surface wear, a few small nicks. These pieces may also have evidence of a sizing, some build up around the stones and / or inclusions seen under magnification, typical for antique pieces. I have mentioned any noticeable issues above and they are all still wearable and eager to be loved and accepted for many years to come, (the preservation of antique jewelry, even those with signs of their age and history, is important to me. : )
But - Please note due to age, this piece is not in mint condition. Pictures also serve as part of the description and condition report so please utilize the zoom feature which will magnify any wear significantly more than what is visible to the eye while wearing : )
