ABOUT:

My biggest and best purchase from my recent inventory trip - this bright and extra chunky rose cut diamond ring faces up around 6 carats! I love the two pear shaped rose cuts on the east and west sides, with four large and extra chunky rose cuts in the center. (Actual carat weight is unknown as I would not remove them). Fun to view from the side to see the highly domed tops, compared to many rose cuts from the period that can be sliced quite thin.

I always try to carry a variety of pieces at various price points and this last trip, I bought a lot of skinny bands and versatile stackers along with some small charms and clasps. But I am always looking for something special and uncommon to splurge on as well. As the days went by in my sourcing, I continued to look for that one big banger of a purchase and when I saw this ring, I knew this was it!

This is a bauble if there ever was one - so many disco balls reflecting the light for a great antique look. The ring face covers the entire top of my size 6 finger so it is a spready one! Certainly has to be one of the most glittery beasts I have had in the decade plus that I've been doing this. With the special moody sparkle of the foiled rose cuts. It was a lot of fun to photograph and video in various lighting conditions - feel free to check my website or contact me for more images and I have several more videos to send as well.

Crafted with antique dutch (or also named holland, Antwerp or crowned rose cuts) with the high crowns, appropriately named considering I found this in the Netherlands! The four larger stones splaying out from center are surrounded by a halo of custom sized / various circular cut rose cuts to fill in all the spaces and completely encrust the ring face. I believe this was a brooch or something at one time with a closed back and foiled gold back, the diamonds set in silver as was customary for the period. The ring face is certainly 1800s antique. The shank is later than the ring face with several hallmarks and crafted in 14k gold. Exciting to see how lively the foil still is despite age. One of the benefits of it being a conversion is that it wasn't as heavily worn as it would have been if it was always a ring.

A very impactful, head turning piece. The rose cuts vary in form and size giving the ring face an organic feel with some slightly larger than others, most round but some more oblong along with the pear shapes. I just love the untamed chunky appearance of old rose cut diamonds and these are some beasts!
: )

Antique box in photos is not included. Please note the measurements as I have small hands and it can be difficult to decipher scale from photos.

HALLMARKS:
Stamped 585 inside the shank, the numerical hallmark used in Europe for 14k gold. It also has the oak leaf hallmark used in the Netherlands and a maker's mark. These are later hallmarks than the antique ring face since they are on the shank which was added in the vintage period.

MEASUREMENTS:
Currently measures a size 6 1/4.
Weight is 6.5 Grams.
The four larger rose cuts measure 7.7x6.2mm / 7x5.7mm / 7mm round / 6.8mm round, so these face up at at least a carat each. A modern round brilliant of 7mm typically measures about 1.3 carat to give you an idea of scale.
The smaller diamonds in the halo also vary in size from 2.7mm up to 4.4mm. There are 16 stones in the halo, 6 measuring 3.5mm and 6 measuring 2.7 to 3mm, with the others measuring 3.7mm and up.

Rose cuts are difficult to estimate in closed back settings because exact depths are unknown and there aren't any great formulas out there for calculating carat weight without removing them and putting them on a scale which I would not do in exchange for ruining the antique setting. With the flat backs, rose cuts are spreader with a lower carat weight typically than modern diamonds with pavilions. But if compared to a modern diamond cluster, this ring faces up with the appearance of a six carat diamond cluster. Again actual carat weight would be less but is unknown.

The ring face is 20mm in diameter and it stands about 8mm tall off the finger to the high crowns of the diamonds.

IMPORTANT CONDITION NOTES:

As mentioned, I suspect it is a conversion because the back of the ring face isn't curved to go against the finger like an original ring would be. It has some rippled areas that appear to have been smoothed down, although it is comfortable to wear. I can see the solder at the shoulders connecting the shank to the ring face. This is not seen while wearing as it is tucked under the ring face which overlaps the ring shoulders. You can also see this when it is off the finger, that the ring face lists slightly to one side with the way the shank was added. I don't find this noticeable when it's on my hand and but I wanted to mention it as I always study everything to make sure there are no surprises.

Typical antique diamonds in non uniform shapes and sizes with some small natural inclusions. Some are eye clean, some have a smattering of carbon specks that are eye visible if you are seeking it out but not super glaring. And then some have some fainter frosty inclusions. One has an indented natural inclusion that carries up like a tiny crease to the surface on one of the smaller stones. They are all quite lively, especially the larger stones, where you have to get it under a loupe to pick things out. Some of what is seen is from age to the foil back. While there is no super dark rust or muddy appearance, there are some cloudy areas around the perimeters of some of the stones and some cloudy spots to the foil backs when looking through the stones. This is expected for closed back stones of this age, as the piece typically would not be antique if the foil were perfect. Having said that, this is one of the better and brighter ones I've had. Also typical they can read a bit gray from the foil as these were meant to be viewed by fireside and candlelight, but when the piece moves it glitters. None of the stones move, I don't see any chips or damage.

But please note this is not a mint condition item. Pictures also serve as part of the description and condition report so please utilize the zoom feature which will magnify any wear significantly more than what is visible to the eye while wearing : ). The sun highlights the sparkle but also magnifies inclusions so that is also something to consider.

Will be sent with additional insurance, expedited delivery and signature confirmation upon delivery at my cost.
