ABOUT:
This is a two for one! Two separate rings that were connected at some point in their loooong history to make one double band ring. Special piece with organic hand made appearance and age of over 200 years.
So this ring is Two ever popular French antique diamond five stone stacker band rings in 18k gold with diamonds set in silver collets as was customary during the time to set the diamonds in white metal. One of the bands is set with rectangular table cut diamonds while the other is set with two table cuts that alternate with rose cut diamonds. They were soldered together at the back to become one double band ring.
The shanks are a warm rosy gold along with gold to the back of the ring faces, the correct and customary fabrication for these half hoops, although they each differ slightly in fabrication. The diamonds are set in silver collets with foil backing to reflect the light, all in closed back settings.
Both rings date to the Georgian period - 1700s to very early 1800s. The table cut diamonds are one of the earlier methods of diamond cutting and are quite collectible.
Found in Paris. I always wish I knew the stories my pieces could tell. This one may have been a betrothal or wedding set, the full table cut band most likely earlier but both very old.
Antique box is not included. Please note the detailed measurements that I always provide, as I have small fingers and it can be difficult to determine scale from pictures where I am required to show zoomed in detail.
HALLMARKS:
Later French hallmarks for 18k and silver - the hallmarks are more recent than when the ring was made.
MEASUREMENTS:
Currently measures a size 5 on the mandrel, the table cut band seems slightly smaller than the other but the two of them combined fit a size 5. Weighs 2.7 Grams.
Ring face is 8.8mm north to south on the finger and end diamond to end diamond is 17mm wide east to west for the wider table cut band.
Exact depth and thereby carat weight is unknown as I would never remove them from the setting. They widen out an unknown amount in the collet setting which wraps up and around the edges of the stone.
Here are the visible measurements of the diamonds in the settings:
The largest table cut is about 5mm, then a pair at 3.5mm and 2.5mm. For the other band, the largest rose cut is 3.5mm and the others are 2 to 2.5mm.
CONDITION NOTES:
All my pieces are pre-owned and in estate condition. This ring is over 200 years old. The diamonds read warm to gray from age to the foil. Some are a bit darker from deterioration, the largest center table cut reads especially warm to light brown, with the foil having aged to a yellow color under magnification, but it reads warm to light brown while wearing. The diamonds appear quite ancient with some rough or frosty edges and some chips and nicks. Some wear to the collets from age. These old stones in old settings have a much more subtle sparkle as they were made before electricity was invented and were best viewed by candlelight and firesides.
Lots of patina which could be cleaned up but most of my buyers prefer original condition. Shank is slightly out of round but still sturdy. Still a fun stacker with a wonderful antique look. But due to age, please note this is not a mint condition item. These need more careful wear as the closed / foiled settings should not get wet as the moisture causes deterioration to the foil and discoloration.
