ABOUT:
A chunky, domed gypsy band stacker for a lovely geometry and sparkle in your ring stack. This French antique piece is crafted in a lovely, rosy 18k gold (not like the vibrant pink rose gold of today). It is set with three old cut diamonds totaling around 1.15 carats.
This ring has had some alterations, I wish I knew the stories it could tell. Usually we see these gypsies remaining wide all the way around. This one had the gold shaved down on the vertical edges creating a bevel to each side of the ring face and a narrowing of the band to the back. Perhaps the wearer didn't like the feel of a wide band and felt it was more comfortable being thinned at the back? Perhaps it was for stacking purposes? Or perhaps for sizing purposes to make it wear larger? I'm not entirely sure but wanted to note it. It is still quite a sturdy piece with quality hand feel and the ring race has a nice thickness to the solid gold.
The gypsy ring was incredibly popular during the Victorian era into the early 1900s and its timeless design remains an ever favored and wearable choice for today. This ring is substantial enough to wear alone but also layers well with other pieces. Rings such as this were also a popular choice for men to wear during this period as well so it is a true unisex ring.
Found in France with their hallmark for 18k gold.
Antique box is not included. Please note the measurements as I have small fingers and it can be difficult to determine scale from pictures.
MEASUREMENTS:
Size: 6 1/2
Weight: 4 grams
Ring face north south measurement: 7.1mm
Height off the finger: 3.4mm
The diamonds each measure about 4.3mm with slightly varying depths making the carat weights around .35 to .43 carat each for a total carat weight of around 1.15 carat. This is an estimation as I would not remove the stones from the setting for exact measurements.
IMPORTANT CONDITION NOTES:
See notes above about the beveled shank. This has created a blunt edge. That and the extension of the pavilions of the diamonds out the back of the ring can be felt on the finger. I do not find it uncomfortable to wear but something to keep in mind if you are particular about how it feels. I find it is mostly felt when sliding the ring off and on. The shank is thin at the back measuring 1.1mm north south by 0.8mm deep - something to discuss with your local jeweler if sizing is desired.
Typical old hand cut diamonds with some faint natural inclusions that are very slightly eye visible to eye clean, seen more under magnification. No dark or glaring carbon spots but a needle or speck inclusion here or there.
Please note that all my pieces are pre-owned and in estate condition. They will have patina, surface wear, a few small nicks. These pieces may also have evidence of a sizing, some build up around the stones and / or inclusions seen under magnification, typical for antique pieces. I have mentioned any noticeable issues above and they are all still wearable and eager to be loved and accepted for many years to come, (the preservation of antique jewelry, even those with signs of their age and history, is important to me. : )
But - Please note due to age, this piece is not in mint condition. Pictures also serve as part of the description and condition report so please utilize the zoom feature which will magnify any wear significantly more than what is visible to the eye while wearing : )
