I take regularly scheduled inventory trips to Europe and around the USA to find unique antique items to bring you! My offerings were all hand picked one at a time to assemble a collection that I hope you will enjoy! Thanks for stopping by!

ABOUT:

This is a personal collection release that I swore I would never sell because I've not seen another like it. But this is me... I tend to rotate out pieces after enjoying them for a time because we can't keep them all!

My favorite things about antique jewelry are their unique and one of a kind quirks and this piece has them. It's special and uncommon because of the mix of old cut diamonds.

At the center are little rose cuts, at the ends are table cuts, and the others are a really unique mix of some other old cutting styles. How to explain... they are like a cross between many old cuts - the tops have 16 facets like a mazarin, but the bottoms have 4 cuts like a table and show an open rectangular or square culet. Seeing more examples it's possible they fall into the old english star cut / double cut or may be some iteration of a mazarin cut, or even a cross between a table and an old mine cut. Several of them are elongated. They have a single row of long triangular, scissor cut crown facets, they don't have the X within the pavilion of a peruzzi though (and peruzzis have three rows of crown facets).

To be honest, It's a bit of a mystery to me but the piece is certainly very old and the cuts are regardless one of the earlier more primitive methods than we find today. We also know that hand cutting diamonds during this period was an art form, and cutters used their personal knowledge and expertise to create each one of a kind stone, so perhaps the expert decided to go more free form in their chiseling away and used a mix of styles. The stones appear quite ancient.

The setting is open backed which may have been done later to brighten them up as pieces from the period would typically be closed backed. The setting also appears quite ancient with reinforcements to the silver collet settings at various times to keep the stones from coming free. The piece has no hallmarks but is crafted in 14k gold with a silver top as was customary for the period to set diamonds in a white metal.

What else to say except that it is one of a kind. I wish I knew the stories it could tell. I purchased it from a dealer friend in Europe.

Please note the measurements as I have small fingers and it can be difficult to determine scale from pictures. Antique box is not included.

MEASUREMENTS:
Size 5 3/4, a little over.
I have no idea how to calculate carat weight on these unique cuts and would not remove them but most of the stones are 3 to 4.5mm in length, elongated. The little rose cuts in the center are smaller.

The ring face is 12.3mm north south and hugs quite low on the finger.

The piece weighs 2.7 grams.

IMPORTANT CONDITION NOTES:

The piece looks quite ancient with fortifications to the ring face especially at the shoulders. The diamonds appear ancient as well with natural inclusions and a few chipped or rough edges. Some have crystal inclusions, one is quite milky, a few have a smattering of carbon and/ or some icy streaks. This is not the ring for the enthusiasts of the Four C's but when seen through the lens of antique jewelry, they are quite special and rare. The piece has a lovely glitter, a chunky untamed antique appearance and is certainly one of a kind. None of the stones move so despite its ancient-ness it is wearable.

Please note that all my pieces are pre-owned and in estate condition. They will have patina, surface wear, a few small nicks. These pieces may also have evidence of a sizing, some build up around the stones and / or inclusions seen under magnification, typical for antique pieces. I have mentioned any noticeable issues above and they are all still wearable and eager to be loved and accepted for many years to come, (the preservation of antique jewelry, even those with signs of their age and history, is important to me. : )
But - Please note due to age, this piece is not in mint condition. Pictures also serve as part of the description and condition report so please utilize the zoom feature which will magnify any wear significantly more than what is visible to the eye while wearing : )

I enjoy making my customers happy and matching unique pieces with new homes. Please feel free to reach out to me with any questions! It means a lot to me that you are visiting my shop! : )
