ABOUT:
Here's another one that wanted to stay in my personal collection forever but I have a chunky rose cut that I reach for often so I decided to let this one go. Super unique and special though, have not had any like it before, the center stone is fascinating.
This vintage ring has a Crystal Clear center elongated fancy / custom cut diamond that is quite thinly sliced with a large hexagonal table making the top side almost transparent, with just a double row of small alternating triangular facets around the rim. It appears quite flat and spready like a portrait cut diamond, but then the underside has a slight dome and rose cut diamond faceting. This gives the stone the unique ability to give off strong winks of sparkle from behind and within the stone, as the light hits the underside facets. It has a faceted and polished girdle so it was either touched up or is just a later, custom cut stone. With a cushioned shape outline, it's like a combo rose cut / portrait cut or with the mostly flat top, almost like a rose cut set upside down. Hard to explain a custom cut - But what a fabulous look to it.
It has more modern style UK hallmarks for 18k gold, but I'm wondering if it was re-stamped for the secondary market because it does have evidence of age and patina. It has some wear to the prongs which takes years and years, in addition to the style and design of the ring. Selling it as vintage to be safe but it also has the two flanking brilliant cut diamonds that were cut earlier than our modern brilliants today. They are not transitional, but the earlier brilliant cuts with frosted girdles, cut in line with the methods used over 65 years ago.
This was sold to me as fancy light brown in color for the center which I don't really agree with, to me it is more of a warmth that is contributed to by the minimal faceting to the stone. It was also sold to me as VS1 which I do completely agree with because it is amazingly crystal clear. Lovely to find such clarity being that the stone is as transparent and spready as it is.
Not a high carat weight since the diamond is so thinly sliced, but exceptionally spready with the face up appearance of almost a carat for the center stone which has a, not oval, but more elongated cushioned outlining shape - (actual carat weight is significantly less, additional measurements below.)
A unique and special one for sure, crafted in 18k yellow gold with contrasting prongs in a white precious metal (I don't scratch test prongs for fear of damage).
Gorgeous design and unique sparkle on a ringstack. I'm sad to let this one go.
Antique box is not included. Please note the measurements as I have small fingers and it can be difficult to determine scale from pictures.
MEASUREMENTS:
Size 7 1/4.
The center diamond is 9x4.7mm and thinly sliced. The side stones are 3.7mm each / around .2 carat each.
Weight 4.2g
The three stones east west span about 14.8mm.
Height off the finger: 4.3mm
IMPORTANT CONDITION NOTES:
The center stone is fabulously eye clean, I can't even detect a speck under magnification. The only thing I see is an indented natural inclusion at one corner at the facet edge between the table and the smaller outlining facets. GIA defines this as a dent that occurs under the surface of a diamond as a result of the diamond cutter's decision not to polish it off, because doing so could end up harming the diamond so the cutters would work around it - this is not considered a defect or blemish but under strong magnification it looks just a bit uneven at that tiny point and this is not eye visible. The side stones while having little to no eye visible inclusions are a bit on the milky side under magnification, possibly due to fluorescence.
For the side stones, the two or three prongs show some wear but both stones are still very well surrounded and secure. The center stone is held by only four prongs. They are wider and more strap like in each corner than a common, daintier claw prong but they do show some wear. The center stone is secure and cannot come free but it is something you would want to keep an eye on over time as it can move slightly in the setting and sometimes click when you tap it. For this reason, in addition to the more thinly sliced center stone, I recommend gentler wear, as I do on most all of my preowned pieces with signs of age.
My items do well without paperwork as I sell only one of a kind pieces so there is no certification included as I prefer not to take the piece apart to send the stones off for paperwork. Please see the detailed write up which provides more information than a letter grade would.
Please note that all my pieces are pre-owned and in estate condition. They will have patina, surface wear, a few small nicks. These pieces may also have evidence of a sizing, some build up around the stones and / or inclusions seen under magnification, typical for antique pieces. I have mentioned any noticeable issues above and they are all still wearable and eager to be loved and accepted for many years to come, (the preservation of antique jewelry, even those with signs of their age and history, is important to me. : )
But - Please note due to age, this piece is not in mint condition. Pictures also serve as part of the description and condition report so please utilize the zoom feature which will magnify any wear significantly more than what is visible to the eye while wearing : )
