ABOUT:
An ornate and uncommon antique engagement ring. This 1800s French piece has a gorgeous basket setting of ornate prongs leading up to a chunky elongated old mine cut diamond.
The old hand cut stone has a very nice clarity and color with organic feel to it in that the stone is not perfectly symmetrical. We antique diamond enthusiasts love to find these quirks in antique stones hand cut in much more limited supply compared to the millions of carats of modern machine cut diamonds produced each year now. It is held up in the prongs to catch the light from all sides for a lovely antique sparkle amidst the ornate setting.
Sturdy setting in 18k gold which has a gorgeous antique patina resulting in rosy hues, nothing like the vibrant pink rose gold of today.
French hallmark for 18k gold on the back, there are two other hallmark strikes, likely the original gold stamp and goldsmith mark which are partial / faded now due to their location.
Antique box not included. Please note the measurements as I have small fingers and it can be difficult to determine scale from pictures.
MEASUREMENTS:
The ring is a size 7 1/2
The ring face is 9.5mm north south and 5.7mm off the finger.
The ring weight is 3.25 grams.
The diamond is about 4.2 by 3.7mm.
IMPORTANT CONDITION NOTES:
Gorgeous gold work. Some surface wear if anything but it is still very legible and clear. Prongs are in good shape. The diamond is eye clean as it is not a huge stone, with just a faint frosty spot here or there seen under strong magnification. No dark carbon and nothing glaring, no damage. It's a sweetie antique-ie! : )
Please also note that I take some photos / videos in the sunshine because it captures the lovely color and sparkle, but it also highlights any surface wear, scratches, abrasions, buildup or inclusions that can catch the light, making these things appear worse than they would with normal day to day wear. : ) Hopefully the pics in all lightning conditions help as they serve as part of the description.
Please note that all my pieces are pre-owned and in estate condition. They will have patina, surface wear, a few small nicks. These pieces may also have evidence of a sizing, some build up around the stones and / or inclusions seen under magnification, typical for antique pieces. I have mentioned any noticeable issues above and they are all still wearable and eager to be loved and accepted for many years to come, (the preservation of antique jewelry, even those with signs of their age and history, is important to me. : ) There are no dark spots to the gold, it was just difficult to photograph because it is so shiny and mirrored that it reflects its surroundings including the green trees out the window.
But - Please note due to age, this piece is not in mint condition. Pictures also serve as part of the description and condition report so please utilize the zoom feature which will magnify any wear significantly more than what is visible to the eye while wearing : )
