ABOUT:
Awesome French vintage to antique Savoyard creole hoop earrings with faceted ball designs that serve as the catch.
These open and close by tension where you pull the end of the ear post out from the faceted ball, insert it into the ear and then slide it back into the little hole in the ball to secure it closed.
This style of earring falls into the category of French regional jewelry (a huge passion of mine). Regional, or folk jewelry, is defined by a particular style confined to a particular region. The faceted ball detail is what set them apart as Savoyard creoles.
The style goes back to the 1800s but since these have the French hallmark used since 1838, I don't know if they are from the 1800s or more recent but they are certainly at least vintage. I think there is a very good chance these are older models just looking at the warm patina and slightly rosy highlights but difficult to say for sure since the French don't use date marks.
Please note the exact measurements which are specified below as many people seem to expect the hoops to be larger, although these are larger in size than many of the huggie style hoops.
Beautiful patina. I've seen these worn with the faceted ball at bottom center but also up by the earlobe.
Please also note the width of the hoops since those are run through the earlobe - something to note if you have tiny ear holes : )
French hallmark for 18k gold with goldsmith stamp.
Antique box not included. Please note the measurements as I have small fingers and it can be difficult to determine scale from pictures.
SIZE & MEASUREMENTS:
They measure about 27mm in diameter. The width of the hoop that runs through the ear is 1.5mm. The faceted ball is 9mm in diameter. Weight is 2.6 grams combined.
IMPORTANT CONDITION NOTES:
As with all my pieces this is in estate condition. Some surface wear, a little bit of wear around the hole in the ball that serves as the catch, but I don't really see any major damage and the catches function well. Nice patina and wonderful coloring. But as with all my pre-owned pieces - Please note this is not a mint condition item.
There are no dark spots or weird colors to the gold, they are just shiny and shimmering so they were reflecting the trees outside the window.
