XL 2.7 Carat OCTAGON Shield French Antique PLATINUM Ring Old Mine Cut Diamonds Cluster
XL 2.7 Carat OCTAGON Shield French Antique PLATINUM Ring Old Mine Cut Diamonds Cluster
ABOUT:
Around 2.7 carats of old mine cut diamonds in this large cluster ring make this special piece an impactful something to behold! With a nice geometry and chunky sparkle, this ever popular old mine cluster is unique with its wonderful octagonal ring face. This French antique piece from the Edwardian era is crafted in platinum with the correct French hallmarks. The diamonds are propped in a slightly domed setting with the gallery / underside of the ring face decoratively swirled and open worked allowing the light to shine through and show off those chunky cuts.
The center diamond is an old mine cut around .55 carat set in bead prongs surrounded by a halo of additional bead set old mine cut diamonds.
This would be a wonderful gift - right hand ring, statement piece, or stacker. Please note the measurements as I have small fingers and it can be difficult to determine scale from pictures.
Antique box not included.
SIZE & MEASUREMENTS:
It is currently a size 6. Should be sizable but I always recommend showing pictures to your local jeweler for sizing advice since everyone's skill and opinion are different. The ring face is 15.5mm north south by 15.7mm wide east west. It is 6.5mm tall off the finger. It weighs 5.4g.
Exact size and thereby carat weight is unknown as I would never deconstruct and remove them but estimates to around 2.7 Carats total weight in diamonds.
The center is about 5.5mm by 5mm measuring around .55 carat alone and the other outlining old mine cuts are all 3.8mm to 4.2mm. Most of them have high crowns and are a chunkier cushion cut.
It's a sparkle fest.
CONDITION NOTES:
All my pieces are pre-owned and in estate condition. As can be typical for antique hand cut diamonds they pretty much all have inclusions, some like the center stone quite heavily included with a smattering of crystals and some tiny carbon specks. The carbon is not really eye visible but the overall frostiness is, and several others read this way as well. With an eye visible carbon and/or silk inclusions in addition to the frosty areas. This is a ring for people who like chunky antique old mine cuts and don't mind the eccentricities that come with them (me me me! : )
It looks like the bead prongs were fortified, particularly around the center stone. It is possible that when the heat was used, the temperature change caused some of the existing inclusions to spread.
One diamond has an area with several flakes of loss leaving a rough, unpolished area to the surface of the stone. Several others also have a crease or frosty area at the surface, the result of inclusions carrying up to the surface. Some of these, like is the case on the center stone are an indented natural inclusion - GIA defines this as a dent that occurs under the surface of a diamond as a result of the diamond cutter's decision not to polish it off, because doing so could end up harming the diamond so the cutters would work around it - this is not considered a defect or blemish but the crease does interrupt the surface. They all appear complete / cushioned round in shape with none appearing cracked in half and none leaving a gap between the edge of the stone and the setting. Instead, it is more studying the surface of the stone where these interruptions are seen.
Also typical for antique stones, some have a slight warmth, one reading quite gray, most noticeable in ambient light and seen in the photos when it is in a ring box. Although some of what is seen is due to how the side stones reflect the light differently because they are splayed outward and do not "face up" like the center stone which is perfectly perpendicular from the ring face to the eye view.
I've had one other octagon ring with smaller total carat weight that I sold for several thousand more than I am offering this one, taking into account the inclusions to the diamonds, so please take note of those inclusions as I am selling it as is, priced with these things in mind. Still an impactful and fun to wear piece. But this is not the ring for collectors who like their antique diamonds bright white and crystal clear.
Due to age - please note this is not a mint condition item.
